SUMMARY:ASCE’s IIJA Implementation Series: Building A More Resilient Grid
DESCRIPTION:The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) will invest a historic $73 billion to rebuild our nation’s electric grid and will include provisions aimed at reinforcing its resilience. The Department of Energy (DOE) will receive the majority of the funds dedicated to grid reliability and resilience, and the agency is now responsible for standing up 60 new programs and expanding existing programs, including research and development programs.\nIn fact, the IIJA dedicates $5 billion directly for grid resilience, establishes a new competitive grant program for projects demonstrating innovative approaches to harden the grid, provides $3 billion focused on advancing smart technologies, and sets aside $1 billion for rural grid resilience. However, beyond grid resilience, the IIJA also aims to increase energy efficiency and smart grid functions in the building industry, through several new programs and grants for states to create loan funds for building energy upgrades, as well as grants to incentivize states to develop updated building codes.\nJoin ASCE’s Government Relations team and Whitney Muse (Chief of Staff for the Office of Electricity and the Office of Grid Deployment, DOE) on May 25th from 3:00 – 4:00 pm Eastern Time to learn more about how the agency is undertaking new programs to strengthen the resilience of our nation’s grid, and what it means for transmission planning amidst a transition to renewables.
